2D Mirror / Data Portrait Experimentations

Activity 1

In this project, I kind of don't know what I need to do or what kind of data I could use, so I heavily relied on designer Giorgia Lupi's Personal Data survey. By following the instructions, I added as many dots as my current age. Then, following the instructions, I placed a red rectangle where I am from, since I am from Europe, and a yellow rectangle for where I am now, which is in North America. Then I decided whether I’m a night owl or a morning person because I usually become more active with my work after the sun sets (and the stress of needing to finish it tonight hits me). As for whether I sing when I take a shower, that was a big no, since I usually think or take quick showers. It was one of the weird and funny questions in the survey. Since I skipped around the survey, I went back to the half-glass question, where I placed a red triangle at half-full. If you ask me, I would say the glass is half-filled with water. Another question caught me off guard, and I had to read it twice because of how unexpected it was. Then I made my typical day. I usually go to sleep at 11 PM, so I drew 11 black lines. I always try to go to bed before midnight to get at least 7 hours of sleep. Due to school and even at home, whether I like it or not, I will wake up with everyone else at 7 AM, so I drew seven yellow lines. As for what pet, it’s obviously a cat. You don’t need to take them for a walk three times a day; they’d rather stay in a cozy house. So, obviously, I put a cat as the answer, but since we’ve never owned a pet before, I left the number of pets blank. Then comes the question of phone software. Since I’ve always had Android phones, I’ll always prefer Android. So yes, I put a turquoise triangle. When I tried using an iPhone, I just got super confused about how to use it. As for this one, I usually try to keep it far away from me but still in the same room while charging it at night, so I placed a line for that somewhere in the middle of the turquoise triangle. For my personality, I am mostly introverted. I need to recharge before I can be more social with others, so I chose a blue half-moon shape as my answer. For the last question, I like using a pencil a lot since I can fix my mistakes, unlike with a pen. I also make light lines to represent my thoughts, and with that, I completed Giorgia Lupi's survey. So, I moved on to the next part of the activity: the face mirror or face tracker. I had an issue where nothing was showing until I realized my computer's camera was not switched on. After switching it on, I played around by moving my head to the left. I did the same with this when I moved my head to the far right and played around with how the shapes reacted to how much I turned my face. That was an interesting experiment before I moved on to input my data from the survey. So, here I made a screenshot of all the elements I am planning to implement in the code. So first, I spent a few minutes finding where I can change the image being shown. After I located it, I started to add them to the code. First, I put some of my own code and original code together and experimented with them to see how much it changed and how well it was still tracking my face. Then I put the rest of my survey data in and started playing around with rotating my face. Then to the other side, and it was funny to see how some things change at a 90-degree angle. So I started to play around with layers. Continue switching around to create a larger space, with one item going down and the symbols moving up, as shown in the example. And I ended up with this. I made one last small change to the order of the layers. Then I started to play around with how it would be affected or changed if I leaned very far to the left with my face. Then I did the same by leaning to the right side. And the final variation/layer order, and that's when I realized I messed up the sizing. I kind of wish I had tried re-exporting the images with different sizes so they wouldn't cover each other up.

Activity 2

Since I don't have an Apple device and my previous experience with exporting didn’t end well, I first downloaded Scaniverse on my phone and tried to scan my keychain from my backpack On the first try, due to being reflective (and my phone for some reason not being fully compatible with the app), some of the parts were lost because the app was unable to scan them in. Even though I tried to use the podium and light, it still couldn't fully scan the keychain in. Then, when I was home and saw my classmate successfully scan a plush with the app, I tried it myself, and surprisingly, it scanned very well (so I scanned the plush bunny I brought with me from my home country). But when I made the second scan, it got too blocky for some reason, even though I covered parts twice as much as I did with the first take. Then I tried to scan something more complex: a scan of my collective toy (Figuarts/Figma). It was able to capture the middle part, such as the torso and face, but the legs, arms, and hands disappeared, probably due to being too small and reflective, as it has a painted surface. Here is the side view; for some reason, it was able to capture my collectible toy in 2D, making it look very flat from side view. When I rescanned, the same problem came up. It made the scene 2D or flat, losing its 3D parts, such as the sides, and this time even the legs didn't get scanned properly. So, I changed the location to my desk (that's when I did the experiment that I explained in the presentation) and used a chunkier collectible (Nendoroid) I had, hoping it would capture better since it has a more matte texture. But unfortunately, like with my other collectible, it scanned the side torso and face, but the rest of the parts got messed up when the file was processed and once again become 2D/flat. So I went back to a simple object (a flashlight), but for some reason, it also got messed up, even though it was much simpler and only had a matte black color. So I tried a simpler windmill-like object, but for some reason, it was recorded in three different places (I didn't use the experiment method either), so I don't know how the scene got so messed up. There is another angle of a very messed-up 3D scene in Scaniverse made of small objects, and after that, I stopped scanning for the day. So, in the classroom, I tried again. I used my water bottle, which was not a wise choice, but I ended up making a very interesting-looking model out of it. And just because I made another one, it was still very reflective for the app, so I switched to another object. I tried my headphones next, and the part that connects to the side completely disappeared, even though it was not that reflective. Here is another angle, which even gives a very wobbly-like feeling, so again my phone couldn’t scan it very well. I re-scanned and changed a little bit of how the object's stats were set, but the same result occurred: the connecting part was not being scanned. Then, using a random marker I found in the room, I did scanning with it, but it became the same as the water bottle scan. So, I gave up and used the iPads, which for some weird reason, were able to scan my reusable lunch bag very well. It was scanned much more accurately than when I did it with my phone. Then I also scanned my ID card holder with my iPad, and once again, it was scanned much better than the one I did with my phone. It didn't have the wobbly feeling at all, and the texture wasn't messed up either. Even when I rescanned my headphones with the iPad, the top was scanned much more accurately, but it still couldn't capture the connecting part between the two sides and left holes. Then, when it was time to export once again, my phone and its compatibility with this app were terrible because whenever I tried to export any file format, the texture was lost. This was made in Meshmixer, but even when I opened my plush bunny in C4D, the same thing happened—the texture was totally lost. After getting help to retrieve files from the iPads, the texture was not lost during export and appeared correctly. This is one of my ID card holders in C4D, after I started cleaning the parts before bringing it into Meshmixer to make it watertight. Some goes for my reusable lunch bag: it didn't lose its texture once again. This IMG was made in C4D, even though the texture was a little blocky in some parts, it was very accurate. Here is a picture of the reusable lunch bag after fixing up part of the app and iPad that I didn’t see after watching Steve's tutorial. Finally, I had a complete model.

Reflexive Workshop

This workshop we did and the article we chose were actually very interesting. It may not influence a lot of my final design for the project, but it was very interesting to see how there are times when people don't notice their behavior and the influence they have on those around them. It was also interesting to see how a wake-up call (like an author being laid off) can make them reflect and improve themselves. Also, how all these surveys tell you what they think you are, but you can also be part of multiple groups. For me, I can be very detail-oriented, but I also enjoy hands-on activities that fall under social. You see, you can't just put a person into one group, since these groups can't define who you are. This is based on what others think people should be like and how they categorize them. The last one was about how each of us made our own selfie and saw how much we are the same, but at the same time, different, compared to the symbols we use to represent ourselves and how we view ourselves.

Final Project 3 Design

Final 3D printed Selfie Design

This project, combined with exploring 3D printing, made me reflect on how objects and data represent my identity. Art and drawing have always been central to who I am, even before I could write. I chose objects like my sketchbook and favorite graphic novels as references, as their art styles inspire me. My creative tools reflect my artistic journey, and through this project, I aimed to capture how art is my comfort and way of navigating the world.
